CHANDIGARH: People’s Party of Punjab president Manpreet Singh Badal on Sunday slammed the state government for “peeking into private lives of people” by way of phone-tapping. He condemned such activities as an attack on the civil rights of people.

“The issue is not as to whose phones have been tapped in the present case. What is serious is that Akali ministers are playing these recordings at news conferences to prove a point,” Manpreet said, adding that they might be right in hitting the nail on the head in the political battle but the basic question is the right of the individual to privacy.

“People have the right to know which agency is behind phone-tapping as it can’t be done without adopting a proper procedure,” he said, adding that home minister Sukhbir Singh Badal must say as to who was indulging in such activities and on whose orders.
