JALANDHAR: Appealing to the secular people in the state to chalk out a strategy to fight against the reported repression of the ruling Akali government, Punjab Congress spokesperson Sukhpal Singh Khaira said that a peaceful programme would be held to oppose the “jungle raj” of the Badals.

Congress spokesperson Sukhpal Singh Khaira addressing a press conference in Jalandhar on Monday.

Speaking at a press conference, Khaira said that the state is currently witnessing one of the darkest eras of brutality, repression and police terror unleashed by the state government run by the chief minister and his deputy.

“Instead of arresting the culprits responsible for sacrilege and desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib, the deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal must realise that the ‘Sarbat Khalsa’ was a culmination of their arrogant, dictatorial and autocratic governance,” said the senior Congress leader.

He said it is extremely unfortunate that instead of respecting the sentiments of lakhs of people gathered at the Sarbat Khalsa, the junior Badal has taken to “danda raj” and police brutality.

He said on the deputy chief minister’s directives, police slapped sedition charges and arrested leaders, including Simranjeet Singh Mann, Bhai Mohkam Singh, Bhai Gurdeep Singh and Bhai Dhian Singh Mand.

The spokesperson also condemned the Bathinda police for arresting two activists of BKU (Ekta-Ugrahan) group and registering cases against 20 farmers opposing minister Janmeja Singh’s function a few days ago.

He alleged that Sukhbir has curbed the fundamental rights of freedom of speech with an iron hand, besides censoring all kinds of independent media in the state.

He questioned would Sukhbir use anti-national term for his father Parkash Singh Badal, who had burnt a copy of Article 25 (B) clause 2 of the Constitution on February 27, 1984, before the Parliament or when he had submitted a memorandum in 1992 to the then visiting secretary general of the United Nations, Boutras BoutrasGhali, in New Delhi, demanding a sovereign Sikh state of Khalistan.
