FARIDKOT: Protesters waved black flags at Kotkapura MLA and chief parliamentary secretary for rural development and panchayats Mantar Singh Brar in Khara village where he distributed bicycles amongst girl students of a government school.

The protesters, led by Beant Singh Khara, district president of Bharti Kisan Union (BKU), and Parnam Singh Khara, an activist of the unemployed linemen union, stood outside the school as police disallowed them from entering its premises when Brar was inside.

“The gover nment is not accepting the farmers’ demands of higher compensation for crop losses. So we decided to show black flags to the MLA so that our voice reaches the government,” Beant Singh said.

The protesters also blamed the government for the string of sacrileges in the state.

Sources said the function at the school, where Brar reportedly distributed 41 bicycles among girls under the government’s Mai Bhago scheme, was rushed through in view of the protest outside.

Later, Brar told reporters: “I visited the village to distribute bicycles, but some people protested when I came out. We are also concerned about the sacrilege incidents and issues of farmers, but such issues should not be politicised.”
