Chandigarh : Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal has finally accepted the resignation of Congress MLA from Khadoor Sahib Ramanjit Singh Sikki.

Sikki had resigned from the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on October 18 to lodge his protest against the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib at Baath village in Khadoor Sahib and at other places in Punjab saying he was deeply hurt by the incidents.

Uncertainty prevailed over the resignation as norms required him to personally submit his resignation to the Vidhan Sabha Speaker, but he had sent it to the Speaker via mail.

Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal today decided about accepting the resignation after Sikki called him on the phone saying he was looking forward to see his resignation accepted.

The Speaker got a verification of Sikki’s resignation — published in various newspapers — done and also via sources in the Vidhan Sabha.

“I am satisfied over the veracity of his resignation and it stands accepted. Now, there is no need for him to personally come and hand over the resignation. He talked to me and explained his stance over the issue,” Atwal said.

The Speaker also issued a notification declaring Sikki’s Assembly seat Khadoor Sahib as vacant.

Earlier, Sikki had said in his resignation letter that he did not want to be part of the ‘false government’ and hence, was sacrificing his Vidhan Sabha membership for the sake of the Guru.
