New Delhi : Former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh today met Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi this morning to discuss the way forward in Punjab which goes to the polls in 2017.
The meeting lasted around 20 minutes and was said to be “positive”.
Party sources said Amarinder was being banked on to head the state unit and would be asked to take other top leaders along.
Captain would replace incumbent Partap Bajwa whose work, sources said, “the party recognises and would suitably reward in future”.
A source said the restructured organisation would be unveiled “soon” but did not put any timeline to it.
Sources said Amarinder’s three meetings with Rahul in quick succession were indicative of the urgent attention the party is paying to Punjab where it is confident of returning to power.
Rahul personally believes the Congress is in a strong position in the state and AAP is no match to the party.
About the reshuffle, the sources said a team of leaders would be announced to ensure an “adequate place for all”.
Indications today were that Sunil Jakhar was likely to be retained as Congress Legislature Party chief. The party wants Ambika Soni to head the campaign committee, but the issue is still being debated as Captain reportedly has “reservations”.
Lok Sabha MP from Jalandhar Choudhry Santokh is being considered for the position of campaign committee convener.
Rahul has Bajwa’s role on mind
The sources said the issue of Bajwa’s role post-restructuring was weighing on Rahul’s mind and the party could consider a position for Bajwa simultaneous to the reshuffle which is expected for long.
