Supporters celebrate as Amarinder arrives home as Congress captain

PATIALA: State Congress chief and former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh arrived to a rousing welcome in Patiala late on Wednesday evening.

It was the first time that Amarinder arrived in his hometown after his appointment as the president of the Punjab Pardesh Congress Committee (PPCC).

Life in the city came to a standstill as the cavalcade snaked through the streets here.

The charisma of the scion of the royal family of the erstwhile princely state of Patiala could be seen as Amarinder’s supporters waited for hours to welcome him as he drove down from Amritsar.

People lined up on both sides of the road at Focal point, Dukhniwarn Gurudwara point, Fountain Chowk, YPS chowk before he was escorted to his palatial Moti Bagh palace.

People showered floral petals, burst crackers, distributed sweets and danced enthusiastically to the beat of the ‘dhol' and raised slogans for his victory in the 2017 assembly elections.

A cheerful Amarinder stopped at every point and accepted bouquets, siropas (robes of religious honour), mementos and shook hands.

“With his becoming president, the Congress has got a major push for the coming elections. The countdown for the Akali Dal-BJP alliance in Punjab has begun,” said a Congress supporter Vikramjit Singh Chauhan.

District congress committee president Prem Krishan Puri said the “new energy” in Congress workers after Amarinder’s appointment heralded the party’s election mode.
