Chandigarh : Former Deputy Speaker Bir Devinder Singh today appealed to the Chief Election Commission to announce the date for the Khadoor Sahib byelection.
The seat fell vacant on November 17 after the resignation of Congress MLA Ramandip Singh Sikki was accepted by Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal.
In a letter to the CEC, Bir Devinder alleged Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was camping in the constituency, holding Sangat Darshans and doling out financial favours and announcing new projects to influence the electorate.
It would thus be appropriate to announce the date for the bypoll and impose the model code of conduct with immediate effect to avoid corrupt practices unleashed by the ruling party, he alleged.
