DHUDIKE (MOGA): At Dhudike village to distribute bicycles to girl students on Thursday, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) state legislator Bibi Rajwinder Kaur Bhagike was forced to leave after male students joined the farmers protesting outside the venue against the sacrilege incidents in the state.
The SAD had organised a function at the Government Senior Secondary School in Lala Lajpat Rai’s ancestral village, 15 kilometre from the district headquarters, to distribute cycles. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member Jagraj Singh Daudhar was accompanying the MLA, who was invited to the event.
After coming to know about Bhagike’s visit, various farmers’ associations gathered outside the school to protest against the government on the sacrilege issue and agrarian crisis in the state. As soon as the MLA reached the venue along with her Akali supporters, the farmers started raising slogans and showing black flags to her.
On seeing the agitating farmers, the male students of the school, too, joined the protest and started raising slogans against Bhagike. The students asked the Akali MLA not to enter their school, as they were angry over the incidents of sacrilege.
Seeing the resentment among the people gathered there, the MLA decided to skip the function and moved to Chuharchak village after staying there for a few minutes.
A student told HT that most of the schoolchildren gathered outside the school to protest after they came to know about the bicycle-distribution ceremony. He claimed that the girl students, too, denied accepting bicycles from the Akali MLA.
“Twelve farmers’ outfits had taken a decision some days ago that no Akali MLA or minister would be allowed to enter villages till the demands of farmers are accepted and the accused in the sacrilege incidents are arrested. We had opposed the Akali MLA in view of this decision, and the students joined our protest for the cause,”said Kirti Kissan Union state president Nirbhai Singh Dhudike.
Commenting on the incident, Bibi Rajwinder Kaur Bhagike said: “We had visited Dudhike village for distribution of bicycles to girl students. After some people opposed to our visit, we moved to Chuharchak in order to avoid any confrontation.”
