BATHINDA: Congress leader and Abohar MLA Sunil Kumar Jakhar has accused the Punjab government of protecting the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and liquor baron Shiv Lal Doda, an accused in the brutal murder of a man in his farmhouse at Ramsra village near Abohar on Friday, by providing him security instead of arresting him. Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Jakhar said that the police have provided him security at his house on the pretext that he was under house arrest.

Jakhar said that, in fact, the protection has been provided to the accused to save him from the wrath of the public as the Balmiki community has announced to protest against the killing.
Urging chief minister Parkash Singh Badal to intervene and ensure the arrest of all the accused in the case, Jakhar said that the failure to do so could lead to another bout of protests across the state.
Jakhar said that the station house officer of Bahawala police station, under whose jurisdiction Doda’s farmhouse is located, used to stay there, so a free and fair probe was not expected from the police.
That the police were biased is also reflected from the fact that a case under section 376 (rape) of the IPC was registered against the victim Bhim after the fatal attack on him.
Jakhar alleged that the farmhouse , where the crime was committed, had virtually become an office of the crime investigation agency wing of the police. He termed the crime a meticulously planned one.
Doda, his nephew Amit Doda and five others have been booked for the murder of Bhim, 27, a former employee of Doda, at the farmhouse of the liquor baron. The incident had triggered protests in Abohar with the protesters setting afire many liquor vends of Doda. None of the accused has been arrested so far.
