Hoshiarpur : Congress MLA Sunder Sham Arora today threatened to go to the high court if the state government failed to appoint three sanitary workers per 1,000 people and provide them with protective equipment.
Arora in his letter to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said as per norms, every sanitary worker was to be provided gloves, gumboots, towels, soap, oil and mask. He said in the state this protective equipment was not being given to sanitary workers in violation of the Prohibition of Manual Scavenging Act. He said the state government didn’t take appropriate action even though they demanded that sanitary workers be appointed on a permanent basis.
He further said the state should learn from the Chennai floods, which claimed nearly 400 lives and damaged property worth Rs 30,000 crore. The floods occurred due to blocked drains.
Arora said he would file a public interest litigation in the Punjab and Haryana High Court if the state government didn’t act. He said the state government was not utilising money in public interest.
