Bathinda : A day before the Congress rally at Goniana Road, Bathinda Senior Superintendent of Police Swapan Sharma said the security cover for Congress leaders was in keeping with the protocol and was under “Z” category.

While extra police force was called in for the “sadbhavna” rally of SAD a few days ago, the SSP said there was no need for the same for the Congress rally.

Congress district president Mohan Lal Jhumba said there appeared to be no issues pertaining to the security or traffic for the rally. “We have roped in young party activists from nearby Bathinda, Mansa, Muktsar and Sangrur districts for the smooth flow of traffic,” said Jhumba.

While the police refused to reveal the exact number of policemen deployed, Jhumba said around 500 policemen had been put on duty.

Bathinda Deputy Inspector General Ranbir Singh Khattra and the SSP visited the rally venue and held meetings with senior police functionaries.

“We are only maintaining the protocol of providing security in view of the Z security cover to Congress leaders who will participate in the rally,” said the SSP after interacting with Congress workers.

Rajan Garg, son of former Punjab Minister Chiranji Lal Garg, said despite pressure tactics adopted by the Punjab Government and influencing transporters, the Congress would gather a large number of supporters for the rally.

“We have asked party workers to arrange private vehicles in view of the pressure on transporters by the state government not to provide buses for the Congress rally,” he alleged.
