BATHINDA: The highlight of the Congress Bathinda rally on Tuesday was the united face put up by the state unit with former PPCC chief Partap Singh Bajwa, Congress Legislature Party leader Charanjit Singh Channi, former chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, Congress senior vice president Lal Singh, ex-CLP leader Sunil Jakhar and other state leaders speaking in one voice.

Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh, former PPCC chief Partap Singh Bajwa, and state CLP leader Charanjit Singh Channi during the ‘Badlav’ rally in Bathinda on Tuesday.

Bajwa, with whom Amarinder had a running battle for two-long years, promised his full cooperation. While Bajwa handed over the Congress flag to the new PPCC chief, handing over the reins of the party to him symbolically, the latter presented a shawl to him and then they hugged each other. The two leaders were also seen chatting during the rally.

Congratulating his successor, Bajwa said the message of unity should percolate down. “Let us unite. Captain is like a brother to me. We will be together. Our target is the same,” he said, terming his PPCC post as just a small sacrifice in the interest of the state. The former PPCC chief spoke aggressively, accusing the SAD government of looting and ruining Punjab. “(Chief minister Parkash Singh) Badal should stage a fast-unto-death outside (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi’s house to get ` 52,000-crore debt of Punjab farmers waived. Even if he doesn’t survive, people will not feel bad,” he said, raising issues relating to drugs, power, mortgaging of assets and crop failure. Ambika Soni said Amarinder was a “ray of hope” for the party.
