JALANDHAR: The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) lambasted senior BJP leader Manoranjan Kalia for his remarks against Punjab Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh and called him a “liquor addict”.

“Criticising others will not divert the minds of people. Everyone knows that the BJP has failed to eradicate corruption, drug menace and unemployment. Drug menace has engulfed the state after 2007 because of the BJP,” said INTUC president, Malvinder Singh Kalia had ridiculed Amarinder for his promise to rid Punjab of drugs withing four weeks of coming to power, asking him if he considered liquor to be an intoxicant. Kalia had also targeted Amarinder by saying, “You took an oath holding the gutka (holy book) but when do you have time to recite the verses. You wake up late.”

Malvinder said Amarinder’s promise left the BJP leaders “restless”.

Rajinder Beri, president district congress (urban), also slammed Kalia and said he must stop the drug supply from his area of Qazi Mandi before blaming others. “After police arrested his (Kalia’s) aide for selling illegal liquor, all the BJP workers sat on a protest to support the accused and pressed the police, who had to release him,” he added.
