National Herald case: Congress workers hold statewide protests

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress activists burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi across the state on Saturday against the implicating of party president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case.

During a dharna near Rupnagar headworks, district Congress president Harbhag Singh Saini and former Nangal legislator Rana KP Singh said the party was behind the Gandhis and determined to give a befitting reply to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government. At Gurdaspur, party workers marched from Grand Trunk Road to Jahaz Chowk, raising slogans against the central government. District Congress president and Dera Baba Nanak legislator Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said the Congress victory in a parliamentary byelection in Madhya Pradesh had baffled the BJP.

The Bathinda agitation was led by legislator Ajaib Singh Bhatti and former MLAs Harminder Singh Jassi and Gurpreet Singh Kangar. They burnt an effigy of central government outside the interstate bus terminus. In Sangrur, former MLA Surinder Pal Singh Sibia alleged “dictatorship” in India.

In Moga, hundreds of Congress workers gathered at Subedar Joginder Singh Chowk and accused Modi of trying to destroy the opposition in the world’s biggest democracy.

Addressing the gathering, former health minister Dr Malti Thapar said the Centre has been attacking Congress leadership in many states. Former legislator Vijay Sathi accused the Union government of playing a “dirty game” of targeting opposition leaders.

Terming National Herald case political vendetta, the Kapurthala Congress workers led by Sultanpur Lodhi legislator Navtej Singh Cheema and former minister Joginder Singh Mann raised slogans against the PM. The The Amritsar rural unit of the party staged a noisy protest at Railto Chowk. District Congress president Gurjit Singh Aujla, legislators, former MLAs, and party workers from the state and district units participated. Members of the Youth Congress, the NSUI, the Mahila Congress and other frontal organisations of the party also organised protests.
