LUDHIANA: District Congress leaders in heavy numbers paid their respect to senior party leader Harnam Das Johar, who died in Ludhiana on Sunday morning.

Congress leaders, including party district chief Gurpreet Gogi, former president Pawan Dewan, and other leaders — Malkit Singh Dakha, KK Bawa, Amarjit Singh Tikka and several Congress councillors — were also present during cremation ceremony. SAD leaders Harbhajan Singh Dang and Madan Lal Bagga were also present.

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Captain Amarinder Singh had asked Gurpreet Gogi to attend the ceremony and lay a wreath on his behalf to pay respect to the departed soul.

Gogi said it was a major loss to the family as well as the Congress, as a large number of youth leaders were inspired by Johar.

“Johar has always exhibited high level of politics and has provided knowledge and inspiration to many budding leaders irrespective of party line,” Gogi said.

Opposition leader Charanjit Singh Channi also condoled the demise. Channi said “Senior Congress leader will be missed in the Punjab political circles for his ability and political virtue. He was a lighthouse for younger politicians because of his political wisdom.”

Remembering Johar, Channi said Johar was a true Congressman, who remained the MLA from Ludhiana west constituency in 1985, 1992 and 2002.

KK Bawa said he had worked with Johar who always helped him not only in political affairs, but also in personal life.

MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu said he was a true statesman. “Such leaders are rare.”
