Patiala : Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal said that reported death of farmer Jaswant Singh (65) belonging to Gajisalar village in Samana due to crop failure has exposed indifferent and insensitive attitude of Parkash Singh Badal headed government in Punjab.

In a statement on Monday, she said it was painful that the deceased farmer committed suicide just hours before the wedding ceremony of his daughter. He was charred to death as he set the paddy stock in his fields on fire. She said it was a matter of concern that about two dozen cases of suicide have been reported in the past two months. She accused the Badal government of being arrogant in its approach pertaining to resolving problems faced by farmers of the state. She said that the sad plight of farmers in the state was due to lack of compassion and far-sightedness on the part of the Badal government.

Bhattal said that the Badal government needed to take preventing measures to resolve the problems faced by paddy farmers and not let the situation drift out of control.

She said that earlier three-four months back, due to laxity of the SAD-BJP government had led to pesticide scam and as a result spurious pesticides were supplied to farmers resulting in large amount of damage to cotton crop.

Bhattal said that SAD-BJP combine government had failed to deal with the problems faced by the farmers. She said that farmers are dying in the state but the state government seemed to have become detached showing no compassion for the farmers.

The former Chief Minister said that SAD-BJP combine government’s present tenure has been disaster for state as it has failed miserably on all fronts. She said that the countdown of the Badal government had started and people of the state were ready to vote out corrupt regime in the next assembly elections to be held in early 2017.
