KALANAUR (GURDASPUR): Laying all speculation to rest, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Capt Amarinder Singh said here on Wednesday that the party would contest the upcoming Khadoor Sahib bypoll, adding that the candidate would be picked by the party high command within two-three days.
CHANDIGARH: Congress leader and former Khadoor Sahib legislator Ramanjit Singh Sikki said on Wednesday here that he would abide by the party decision about the byelection ticket in his assembly segment. “Since I am engaged in sewa (volunteer service) at Darbar Sahib, I could not meet PPCC (Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee) president Captain Amarinder Singh or speak to him on the issue,” he said, adding that he performed sewa every year this month and could not break his routine. “I had no idea the byelection would be announced at the same time,” he claimed. Sikki said he would take time out to meet the PPCC president. “Whatever the high command and he decide, I will abide by that decision,” he said.
Addressing a press conference at Kalanaur, 25 km from Gurdaspur, the former chief minister said he would talk to former Khadoor Sahib MLA Ramanjit Singh Sikki regarding his ‘reluctance’ to contest the February 13 bypoll, as reported by Hindustan Times (‘Congress in a fix as Sikki not keen on contesting’, January 20).
Sikki had resigned as an MLA in October last year in protest against a series of incidents of sacrilege across the state.
