LUDHIANA: In the first meeting of the vigilance and monitoring committee (VMC) chaired by Member of Parliament (MP) Ravneet Singh Bittu at the Circuit House on Wednesday, the MLAs of Congress and Bains group raised questions over the “biased” attitude of the MC officials. They alleged the civic body favours the ruling party but ignores the issues of their respective areas.

They said MC authorities didn’t discuss any development plan with them and they were not informed about the usage of funds for various projects.

Deputy leader of opposition at the legislative assembly, Bharat Bhushan Ashu, raised questions over the constructions of household toilets for needy persons at various wards. He alleged that there were possibilities of irregularities. However, the MC officials denied such allegations.

Ashu alleged that many of the needy people had applied but they did not get any benefit of the scheme under which they had to get aid for constructing toilets at their houses. He also raised questions as the MC has spent crores of rupees on consultants but the projects never met reality. He claimed that the MC failed to start the project of solid waste management properly.

MLA Surinder Dawar said the MC authorities have adopted “biased” attitude as they were not informed about the usage of funds at different projects.

Besides, the MC authorities informed the committee members about the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, Solid Waste Management and Smart City Projects. The committee members were also informed about the status of shifting of slum dwellers to the flats which were constructed under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

Bittu said there was a lack of coordination between the MC authorities and MLAs. “A committee would look into the matter regarding toilets. If officials do anything wrong, they would have to face the music,” he said.

MC commissioner GK Singh Dhaliwal informed the members about the status of various projects and assured that the issues they raised would be looked into. “The functioning of the civic body is impartial and no one is being favoured or ignored,” he added.
