CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh had a meeting with AllIndia Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in charge of Punjab, Shakeel Ahmad, and secretary Harish Chaudhary on Thursday on the issue of party candidate for the Khadoor Sahib byelection.

The leaders gathered at Congress Bhawan here on the sidelines of a meeting on celebrating the birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar.

“The party discussed the names of two to three candidates but is most likely to field former legislator Ramanjit Singh Sikki,” Ahmad told HT. Dismissing reports that the Congress would not contest, he said the popularity graph of the Shiromani Akali Dal was down and the Congress would not leave the opportunity to take it on.

“Sikki is busy at Darbar Sahib for his annual mission of sewa (volunteer service) but he will speak to the state party president on the issue. He resigned on an emotional issue and will most likely be our candidate. If needed, I will get the approval of party president Sonia Gandhi and convey it to Amarinder on telephone,” said Ahmad.
