PATIALA: Former deputy speaker and Congress leader Bir Devinder Singh on Thursday said the Congress must contest the Khadoor Sahib assembly bypoll.
“Signals emanating from certain quarters of the Congress have created the impression in the media as if the party is shying away from facing the bypoll in the Khadoor Sahib. Any kind of dithering on the issue, whatsoever, would prove catastrophic for the party in 2017,” he said. The Congress leader added: “The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) seems to be on the losing wicket, because of huge incumbency disadvantage for 2017 assembly elections. The Congress, as a major stakeholder, must come forward, with its best foot soldiers, to take the battlefield with full dynamism and strength,” said Bir Devinder Singh asking the party leadership to field Ramanjit Singh Sikki as party candidate.
“I am fully confident that if Sikki is re-nominated as the Congress candidate, the bypoll results will be in the favour of the Congress, notwithstanding his committed presence in Sri Harmandir Sahib till January end for partaking Sewa in Darbar Sahib”, he added. He said state Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh should lead the party from the front and should file the nomination papers of Sikki, with all the leaders of the party on the board, and start campaigning in Khadoor Sahib constituency. “Let Sikki be allowed to complete his sewa in the Golden Temple and join the campaign on February 1,” he added.
