TARN TARAN: Justifying the decision of Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh to boycott the Khadoor Sahib bypoll, state Congress general secretary Harminder Singh Gill on Thursday said Captain had taken the decision as per the wishes of the people who have not been delivered justice in the sacrilege cases of Guru Granth Sahib that occurred across the state last year.

He claimed that the Punjab Congress chief took the decision with the consent of the high command and other senior leaders and it did not mean that the party had run away from the battlefield. “It was the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) which actually ran away from their duty to nab the culprits of sacrilege incidents and not the Congress, which decided to stay away from the bypoll to protest against the inaction of the government on this issue,” he added.

Lashing out at deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, Gill said irrespective of the fact that the issue of sacrilege was unresolved, the deputy CM was eager to win the bypoll, which was being conducted as a result of resignation by Congress MLA Ramanjit Singh Sikki in protest against the sacrilege incidents.

Taking serious note of the comment made by his senior colleague Jagmeet Singh Brar on Amarinder’s move regarding the bypoll, he said Brar should keep himself in discipline and not make any negative remark against the state chief, as all the party leaders had agreed upon his decision. He said following the party decision, the Congress workers would stay away from the elections.
