Gurdaspur : All India Youth Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring today assured youth that the first priority of the Congress party, if voted to power, would be to establish cottage industry in the border areas of Gurdaspur, Batala and Pathankot.
Braving the chill and cloudy skies with spells of intermittent rains, a sizeable number of youth congress workers attended the gathering.
Warring, while criticising the Central and state governments for not taking measures to bail out the industry in the border belt, said that nothing effective had been done so far to revive the sick industry of the area.
“A majority of the foundry units of Batala have shut shop. The once famed rice mills of Gurdaspur are on their knees. The timber and transport business of neighbouring Pathankot too has been badly hit. We will come out with a clear cut policy to ensure that if not large or medium scale units are set up, at least cottage units can be started to eradicate poverty and the scourge of drugs among the youth, he added.
For farmers, operating a cottage industry at home can supplement the income from farming. For small villages, a cottage industry can allow local residents to come together to produce crafts for sale in locally and national and international markets,” he said.
Those present on the occasion includes PYC president Amarpreet Lally and former Gurdaspur YC chief Kartik Wadhera. Leaders were not allowed to address the gathering with only Warring being given the opportunity to interact with the youth.
