Chandigarh : Senior Congress leader and former PPCC chief Shamsher Singh Dullo today said that without holding decision- making positions, Dalits would not be able to get justice in this country.
He said the Dalits continued to face discrimination at the social, economic and political level. “Even after 68 years of Independence, untouchability continues to be practiced in this country and its victims were Dalits. Owing to this reason, it was a must for Dalits politicians to hold important positions in the political system.”
If there was no been reservation for SCs, they would have never become MLAs, MPs, IAS, IPS officers. Dalit politicians should never hide their caste and never work as subordinates but must assert their position at every level in the political system.
It has been seen that most of the political parties treat Dalit leaders as a bonded labour and inferiors. In most of the universities and colleges, Dalits students were given shabby and sub-human treatment and they were forced to stay aloof from the mainstream in such institutions.
Though Dalit leaders were given high offices, the political parties kept a tab on them and never allowed them to work freely. “I was PPCC chief but many leaders did not cooperate with me because of my background. And the same happened with other Dalit leaders too,” he said.
He said besides casteism other problem faced by Dalits is lack of quality education. Students of upper castes go to convent schools while those of the poor go to state-run schools. The education system has created another problem by dividing the society into upper and lower classes, he added.
