CHANDIGARH: The Congress on Wednesday took a dig at the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for continuing to be an ally of the BJP in context of the NDA government’s stance on the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal during the Supreme Court hearing on the river waters dispute between Punjab and Haryana.
“The Modi government in which the SAD is a partner is out to divest the state of its river waters going by the stand taken in the Supreme Court. The stand can’t be reversed. Under the given situation, chief minister Parkash Singh Badal should explain on what grounds the SAD is continuing its alliance with the BJP,” former Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa said in a statement here.
He called upon Badal to “prove his sincerity to people and the state by breaking his party’s alliance with the BJP in protest against the stand taken by the Modi government”.
“Bad al must withdraw Harsimrat Kaur Badal from the Union cabinet to exert pressure, followed by parting the ways with the BJP,” he said.
Bajwa accused Badal of exploiting people’s sentiments as, he said, as per records, the first notice for the acquisition of land for the SYL canal was issued during the Badal’s second term as chief minister.
He alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attitude was against Punjab and Sikhs. Bajwa referred to the refusal of the Gujarat government to withdraw its special leave petition against the Sikh farmers settled in Gujarat.
