CHANDIGARH: State Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh on Thursday suspected chief minister Parkash Singh Badal’s intentions on bringing a resolution in the state assembly against construction of the SYL Canal.
In a statement issued here, Amarinder said: “Badal has neither wisdom nor had any intention of bringing such a resolution. He did it only after learning that Congress was to move a resolution in the Vidhan Sabha.”
“You cannot support the same thing at the Centre and condemn it in the state assembly,” Amarinder said.
“You cannot run with the hare and hunt with the hounds,” the Congress chief told the CM. Amarinder said while every well- meaning Punjabi was opposed to the construction of the SYL canal, Badal’s credentials and intentions were “too doubtful to be trusted”.
“Whatever decisions the NDA takes at the Centre, the SAD is part of it under the principle of collective responsibility of the government,” he said.
“When the Union government, through its solicitor general, makes a statement in the Supreme Court that it favour ed construction of the SYL Canal, the SAD becomes equally responsible,” he said.
He also dubbed the resolution passed in the Vidhan Sabha an “Akali resolution”, adding that such a resolve was meaningless when the SAD was actually a party to the Centre’s stand in the apex court for the Badal’s daughter- in- law Harsimrat Badal being the Union cabinet minister.
“If Badal’s intentions were sincere, the least he could have done was to withdraw Harsimrat from the government in protest and also withdraw his party’s support to the NDA,” added Amarinder.
