Make party’s RS nominees accountable: Cong MLAs

CHANDIGARH: Voicing their concern over the working of party’s Rajya Sabha nominees, Congress MLAs said they should be made accountable in the state-level functioning of the party.
Attending the Cong ress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting here on Thursday, party MLAs told All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and party affairs in-charge for Punjab Shakeel Ahmad to that the Congress Rajya Sabha members should distribute annual development fund of ` 6 crore equally among all MLAs and constituencies, as per requirement of the state leadership.
Ahmad, who accompanied state Cong ress chief Capt Amarinder Singh and AICC secretary Harish Chaudhary, said the AICC president had nominated former state Congress chiefs Partap Singh Bajwa and Shamsher Singh Dullo as party candidates for the Rajya Sabha. Former CM Rajinder Kaur Bhattal did not attend the meeting.
On being asked by MLAs, Ahmad replied that Punjabi singer Hans Raj Hans, who joined the party on February 20, was never considered for the RS nomination by the party.
Referring to party’s outgoing Rajya Sabha member Ashwani Kumar and MS Gill, Dera Baba Nanak MLA Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said they never supported local party leaders but sided with the MLAs of the opposition.
Requesting anonymity, a Congress MLA said Gill had distributed his entire MPLAD fund in Tarn Taran and Khadoor Sahib areas, which was not justified.
Fatehgarh Sahib MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra suggested that newly nominated RS members be allotted different districts for distribution their funds.
Congress Legislature Party leader Charanjit Singh Channi apprised the central leadership about party’s activities in the Vidhan Sabha during the budget session and the amendments proposed by the party in the resolution on SYL canal for de-notifying land acquisition of the land acquired to build SYL canal was later adopted by the assembly.
Party MLAs also asked Amarinder to chalk out a plan to visit each constituency in the state to strengthen the party at the grassroots level.
