Chandigarh : The Congress on Friday boycotted the Punjab Assembly session to protest against the suspension of 30 of the party’s legislators — including the Leader of Opposition — for all of the previous day.
The legislators, led by Leader of Opposition Charanjit Singh Channi and Bharat Bhushan Ashu, came to the Assembly to register their protest against not being allowed to speak in the House and announced their decision to boycott the Question Hour.
The Congress legislators who had listed their questions were marked absent.
The Congress legislators who returned to the Assembly for Zero Hour again walked out to protest the incidents of desecration of Guru Granth Sahib in 2015.
Channi accused leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal of having “hijacked” their idea of denotifying land acquired for the Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal and returning it to farmers.
Meanwhile, the Punjab Government on Friday admitted to major financial irregularities in granting scholarships to Scheduled Caste students.
It produced a list of illegal beneficiaries under the scheme, including students who were admitted to two educational institutions simultaneously, before the Punjab Assembly on Friday. It also promised a Vigilance inquiry into the suspected corruption.
On Thursday, Speaker Charanjit Singh suspended for a day the Congress legislators after they refused to allow the session to continue unless the Assembly passed a resolution condemning the Central government’s decision to favour the completion of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal.
