NEW DELHI : Ravneet Singh Bittu, Congress MP from Ludhiana, today urged the Union Government to regulate tuition and other fees charged by universities — as per their performance.

Putting a supplementary question to HRD Minister Smriti Irani in the Lok Sabha, Bittu expressed concern at the functioning of private universities, which he said were motivated by the profit motive.

He alleged that universities were mushrooming, but most of them were delivering poorly in academics.

There should be grading of universities as per their performance and fees regulated accordingly, Bittu added.

In response, Irani stated that for the first time, the government had made public the national ranking framework. The first list of rankings would be released in the first week of April. It will enable a comparative study of institutes of higher education, she said.
