CHANDIGARH: Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday exhorted all Punjabis to start filling the SYL canal and ensure it was levelled at the earliest as this was the only way to save 9 lakh acres of fertile land of Malwa region from turning dry and barren.

“Not only will it erase all the remnants of the canal but will also assert our resolve to undo the injustice that Punjab has been subjected to in terms of sharing of waters”, he said in a statement issued here.

He challenged CM Parkash Singh Badal and the Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, who has been claiming to be supporting the Punjab’s cause, to join in the filling of the canal, saying it was the real chance for them to prove their sincerity towards Punjab and the Punjabis, which will otherwise always remain suspect. Blaming Badal for the flip-flop on the issue of de-notifying SYL land acquisition, he asked how come even after three days of the passage of the bill it had not reached the governor. “In 2004, when we passed the termination of sharing of waters act we sent it to the governor the same day. Either Badal was doing it deliberately to bide time or he was too incompetent to realise the urgency of the matter,” he said.
