CHANDIGARH: Punjab leader of the opposition in the state assembly, Charanjit Singh Channi, on Thursday urged chief minister Parkash Singh Badal to break the Shiromani Akali Dal’s (SAD) alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre on the Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal issue.

“I urge the chief minister to protect the interests of Punjab at every level in view of the status quo ordered by the Supreme Court on the SYL Canal on the petition filed by Haryana,” he said in a statement here.

“Now it depends on the conscience of the chief minister of Punjab whether to continue his party’s alliance with the BJP at the Centre or not. Badal should also ask his daughterin-law, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, to resign from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet in protest as the BJP government in Haryana is pushing the case against Punjab,” Channi stated.

“Badal should fight the case in true spirit and it should be pleaded in the Supreme Court with the best available legal experts. Earlier also, the Punjab government led by Badal did not seriously defend the SYL case in the Apex Court, only leading to an increase in the woes of Punjab,” Channi said.

The SYL land could have been de-notified via a notification also, but intentionally, to befool the people of Punjab, the bill was brought by the ruling party in the Vidhan Sabha, he added.

Channi also questioned the silence of the Punjab BJP on the SYL issue even as the party’s government in Ha ryan a was opposed to Punjab’s move.
