LUDHIANA: Congress party workers led by member of Parliament Ravneet Singh Bittu staged a protest near Mullapur Dakha police station on Ludhiana-Ferozepur road on Saturday against the case of trespassing and assault against Bassiyan Bet sarpanch Chuhar Singh.

Bittu alleged that the police have been implicating Congress workers in false cases to please their political bosses.

Bittu also burnt the copies of first information report (FIR) registered against the Congress sarpanch. He announced that if the cases were not cancelled, the Congress will hold protests outside offices of senior superintendent of police (SSP) and deputy inspector general (DIG). During the protest, Bittu entered into an argument with deputy superintendent of police (DSP, Dakha) Ajay Raj Singh. After this, Congress workers blocked Ludhiana-Ferozepur road for at least two hours.

Targeting SAD leaders, Bittu said, “Police have been reluctant in taking action against land mafia that has been grabbing land of people and the drug mafia that has been claiming lives of youths in villages. But they are quick in implicating Congress leaders in forged cases.”

He also warned police that if they don’t cancel the false cases against Congress leaders, he would start fast unto death.

Others, who had joined the protest, were Jagpal Singh Khangura, former MLA Gurdeep Singh Bhaini, Anand Saroop Singh Mohi, Darshan Singh Bir mi, Major Singh Bhaini, Manjit Singh Hambran and Jat Mahasabha Malwa zone incharge Major Singh Mullanpur.

On March 21, Mullanpur Dakha police had booked Chuhar Singh, a Congress supporter and Dalit sarpanch of Bassiyan Bet and eight others for thrashing and abusing a man.
