Badal govt owes 152 crore to 11 lakh job card holders: Jakhar

CHANDIGARH: Senior Congress leader Sunil Jakhar on Sunday lambasted the SAD-BJP government and said it owed ` 52 crore to 11 lakh job card holders in the state under the Mahatma Gandhi national Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS).
Jakhar also sought chief minister Parkash Singh Badal’s explanation over the issue.
Criticising the state government for drawing a rosy picture of state’s finances, Jakhar said these job card holders have been protesting to get their dues from the past many months. However, the state government has been totally non-responsive to their demands, said Jakhar.
The former Congress Legislature Party leader said MNREGS workers in the deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal’s constituency — Jalalabad — had been fighting for their ` 3.82 crore dues.
“The state government, which has resorted to a statistical makeover of state’s financial condition, could not initiate any developmental work this fiscal year under MNREGS. As a result, 5,234 village panchayats across the state have been affected,” said Jakhar.
He said about 11.60 lakh job card holders in the state did not get employment for more than 11 days, whereas as per MNREGA, it is mandatory to provide 100day employment.
