Faridkot court tells Sukhbir to appear before it on April 2

KOTKAPURA SCRIBE HAD LAID ASSAULT CHARGES AGAINST DEPUTY CM
FARIDKOT: The court of judicial magistrate first class (JMIC) Satish Kumar, on Monday, directed deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal to appear before it on April 2 in connection with the 1999 election violence case.
The case against Sukhbir and others was registered on the order of the Punjab and Haryana high court in June 2006 on the complaint of Naresh Kumar Sehgal, a Kotkapura- based journalist, who had alleged that the deputy chief minister, while contesting the parliamentary elections from Faridkot in 1999, had allegedly slapped him and tried to snatch his camera.
The case remained pending in a court here, but was later stayed by the high court. However, the high court had last year vacated the stay on the case and the proceedings resumed in the court of JMIC here again.
Shivkartar Singh Sekhon, counsel for the deputy chief minister, said arguments have been concluded in the case.
Sukhbir had earlier appeared before the judicial magistrate here on February 5 to record his statement. In the statement submitted under Section 313 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), the deputy chief minister had reportedly claimed that he had nothing to do with the 1999 incident when he was contesting for the Faridkot parliamentary seat.
After recording the statement of the deputy CM, the court had adjourned the hearing for February 25. Sukhbir had also appeared in the court in 2007 and had secured exemption from personal appearance.
