Chandigarh : PPCC chief Capt Amarinder Singh today constituted a high- level committee of senior leaders to monitor wheat procurement in the state.

The decision was taken at a meeting attended by Amarinder, AICC general secretary and Punjab in- charge Dr Shakeel Ahmad and secretary in-charge Harish Chaudhry.

PPCC vice- president Lal Singh will be the coordinator of the committee which will hold its first meeting on April 20 here to chalk out the modalities. During the next twenty days, the panel will monitor the procurement process in over 500 mandis across the state.

The exercise is to ensure that the farmers do not face any difficulty in selling their produce and get the payment on time.

Capt Amarinder said that given the track record of the last nine years of the Akalis, it was necessary for the Congress to stand by the farmers so that they do not face harassment by officials.

MP calls for early lifting of produce
Jalandhar: MP Chaudhary Santokh Singh has announced that Congress leaders will take to the streets if farmers continued to suffer due to the delay in lifting of wheat and the dilly-dallying of procurement agencies in making payments. The Congress MP, in a press conference, said, "I visited several mandis in the region where most of the farmers were awaiting the lifting of their produce. Some farmers, whose stock got lifted, were waiting for the payment. No farmer has been made payment within 48 hours, as assured by the state government. The recent Rs 12,000 crore food grain scam has further deepened the crisis for farmers." — TNS
