CHANDIGARH: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday condemned the Punjab government for its failure to intervene in the fee-hike issue.

AAP leaders Himmat Singh Shergil and Lok Sabha member from Faridkot Professor Sadhu Singh said the Parkash Singh Badal-led government has failed to provide relief to the parents protesting against private schools, though the high court in April 2013 ordered constitution of a regulatory body within six months.

The government turned a “blind eye” to the “education mafia” and did not intervene to inspect and withdraw affiliation if a school continued to violate norms, said the AAP leaders.

Reacting to education minister Daljit Singh Cheema’s advisory on not doing politics on the “noble” issue of education, the AAP leaders said: “Had your government not ruined the education system in Punjab, there was no need for us to raise the issue.” They alleged through the Private Universities Act, the Shiromani Akali DalBharatiya Janata Party government had already forfeited all its rights to intervene in case of any wrongdoing in private universities.

Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann, meanwhile, slammed the state government for failing to pay a “single penny” to farmers although more than 40-lakh-tonne wheat crop had been procured in the state.

Mann said he was receiving reports from almost all parts of the state that there was complete chaos in ‘mandis’ due to non-lifting of the procured crop. The Sangrur MP said farmers were committing suicide as they had lost all hope.
