BATHINDA: Demanding an inquiry by conducting a physical verification of wheat and paddy stocks in the state, the Congress on Thursday said the government should act against those responsible for the embezzlement of food grains.

Congress leader Sunil Jakhar addressing mediapersons in Bathinda on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference here, Congress member of legislative assembly (MLA) and former Congress Legislative Party leader Sunil Jakhar said that as soon as the wheat crop procurement comes to an end, the Punjab government should order an inquiry into the embezzlement of food grains by conducting the physical verification of stocks. Jakhar, accompanied by Congress MLA Ajaib Singh Bhatti, former MLA Makhan Singh and Congress leader Sukhdev Singh Chahal, also visited different grain markets to look into the procurement process.

“If the Congress party forms the government in the state, it will ensure action against the accused. We will make sure the properties of those responsible for the mess are attached to recover the losses,” he added.

He also asked why the government was shying away from conducting the physical verification of food grain stocks.

“It will also help in getting the food grains data, which will help the government in avoiding a scenario created due to delay in release of cash credit limit (CCL) for ongoing procurement of wheat crop,” he said.
