Chandigarh : Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Capt Amarinder Singh has distanced himself from the controversy over giving a clean chit to party leader Jagdish Tytler over his alleged involvement in the anti-Sikh riots in Delhi.
He issued the statement after AAP leader HS Phoolka claimed that Tytler had sought appearance before the Akal Takht.
Interacting with NRIs at Hotel Hilton in New York today, the PPCC chief said it was wrong to say he defended Tytler over his alleged involvement in the 1984 riots.
“It is for the investigating agencies and courts to investigate and decide,” he said, while asking, “Who am I to give a clean chit to anyone, including Tytler.”
Replying to another question on the issue raised by the NRIs, he said he had never said the Sikhs should forget 1984. “How can I ask anyone to forget 1984 when I myself resigned from Parliament and my party to protest what happened at that time? At the same time it does not serve any purpose to rake up the issue during every election,” he added.
Referring to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, he asked, “Why does Badal recall the 1984 only during the election days and never before or after that? He always does this to hide his own failures.”
The senior Congress leader supported the demand of several NRIs that there should be no blacklist and nobody should be barred from visiting the country of his roots.
The former CM said after coming to power in 2017 the Congress would invite all NRIs to file objections and claims about their property with a guarantee that they would not be arrested or harassed. “We will review all cases pending against them and ensure that no person facing investigation is arrested,” he added.
