AMRITSAR: All India Congress Committee (AICC) spokespersons Jaiveer Shergill and Charanpreet Sapra have termed the first two years of the Modi government as the "darkest period" of the country, during which not a single promise made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was fulfilled.
AICC spokerspersons Jaiveer Shergill and Charanpreet Sapra at a press conference in Amritsar on Saturday.
Addressing a joint press conference here on Saturday, the two said this period also saw the state of Punjab going from bad to worse. Chief minister Parkash Singh Badal is making tall claims of unprecedented development in the state, but the reality is just opposite, said the spokespersons.
"There was a total lack of financial support from the Modi government to Punjab, whereas during the period of the Manmohan Singh government there was continuous flow of funds to the state," they said.
Shergill and Sapra said the Badal government failed to create jobs, as a result of which around 75 lakh youths in the state are unemployed. Around 25,000 industrial units have shut down in the state due to the lack of government support, they said.
On agricultural front, the Congress leaders said farmers faced a lot of difficulties in selling their produce in grain markets. The number of farmer suicides has risen in the past three years, but the government is least bothered, they said.
"If the Modi government can waive around `1 lakh crore loans of industrialists, then why cannot outstanding loans of `70,000 crore of Punjab farmers be waived?" they questioned.
