Chandigarh : Capt Amarinder Singh, president, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), today said the party leadership and he have always supported the move to give more representation to the youth in electoral politics.
In the 2017 elections, I expect youth to represent more than 35-40 per cent of Congress candidates, he said.
Interacting with nearly 1,000 youths from across the 22 districts of the state at a three-hour-long event organised by the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) here, Amarinder said, “Youth will play a crucial role in deciding the political discourse. It is overwhelming to see such support from youngsters like you. I will not let you down or stop until I re-instil faith in the system among the youth of Punjab.”
The event was conducted by I-PAC’s outreach and digital media team.
On the occasion, the participants took a pledge to help Capt Amarinder Singh in his campaign. A number of participants said that they had heard about the Akali Dal youth wing and AAP, but no one from the Congress had approached them in their colleges.
The army of youngsters, popularly called college and city captains of the districts, discussed ideas on how they could participate and contribute to Amarinder’s campaign for the Assembly elections.
‘Anti-incumbency at play’
Talking in the context of anti-incumbency factor that played a role against the Congress governments in Delhi and Assam, Amarinder said: "If the Akalis are voted to power for the third time, it will mean that my 47 years of experience in politics has failed. Development works do not stand in face of anti-incumbency factor."
