Make recruitments under HC judge’s supervision: Jakhar Four arrested in Lyallpur Khalsa College student murder case

CHANDIGARH: Alleging Vyapamlike scam in Punjab, state Congress spokesman Sunil Jakhar on Tuesday said Akali Dal officebearers were luring youths in the name of jobs in the election year.
Raising doubts over fresh recruitments, Jakhar said the process should be completed under the supervision of a sitting high court judge.
He said the government started the process to recruit 670 sub-divisional officers and senior assistants for which the exam was conducted by Panjab University on November 15 last year. Following reports of alleged corruption, the vigilance department had registered cases.
“Now the names of Maloutbased Akali leaders are coming out in this scam and the vigilance department has slowed down the probe,” Jakhar said. JALANDHAR: The city police on Tuesday arrested four main accused in the case of murder of Lyallpur Khalsa College student Manpreet Singh Manu, 20, a resident of Raj Nagar of Basti Bawa Khel of the city. Two of the accused were arrested from Noida, Manu was killed on May 25 in full public view at Guru Nanak Pura East here.
The arrested have been identified as Balraj Singh Aulakh of Satnam Nagar, Maninder Singh Goli of Suchi village, Palwinder Singh Kalsi of New Kamal Vihar and Bharat, a resident of the Officers’ Enclave. Aulakh and Goli were arrested from Noida.
Aulakh is a former student and three others are presently studying in the same college.
The footage from two CCTV cameras, installed near the crime spot, and a mobile tower location helped the police nab the accused.
In the camera footage, the four accused were seen in a white Maruti Alto car (PB10-CK-9285). The CCTV cameras, installed at various plazas, showed that they travelled to various areas, including SBS Nagar and Shimla. The police, after scanning the footage of CCTV camera at toll plazas, reached Shimla.
The investigation team found that in Shimla, the accused purchased two mobile SIM cards with the help of their local friend Sachin. He was also kept under surveillance.
A team, led by assistant commissioner of police (ACP investigation) Harjinder Singh, raided a hotel, where the accused were staying, but the they fled after getting a tip-off about the police.
Two of them arrived in Jalandhar while the two others moved to Noida from where the police arrested them. Addressing a press conference on Tuesday evening, police commissioner Arpit Shukla said that rivalry between two students’ groups over heading an unofficial student union in the college was the reason behind the murder.
The police commissioner said Gurpreet Singh Gopi is the union’s chief and Harsimranjeet Singh Bathinda is his deputy. The deceased was Bathinda’s supporter. “Aulakh wanted to become the union chief for which both groups had agreed to meet at the Guru Nanak Pura market where the accused killed Manpreet and injured Munish,” he said.
The remaining accused would also be arrested soon as police teams are following them closely, claimed the commissioner.
