CHANDIGARH: Amid clamour for Rahul Gandhi’s elevation to the post of Congress president, party’s Punjab unit chief Captain Amarinder Singh, who is now openly supporting passing of baton to the Nehru-Gandhi scion, met him in New Delhi on Thursday.
Presenting a united front, Amarinder was accompanied by Congress general secretary Shakeel Ahmad, party’s Punjab campaign committee chairperson Ambika Soni, Congress Legislature Party leader Charanjit Singh Channi, senior vice-president Lal Singh, MP Partap Bajwa and Rajinder Kaur Bhattal. The meeting deliberated on coveing all districts of Punjab from June 6.
Party sources said it was decided that during the doorto-door campaign, leaders from other districts will be appointed as observers to reduce groupism. The party, so far missing from the ground except during rallies, will try to connect to villages in all 117 assembly segments in 45 days to counter the doorto-door campaign of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), started as “Parivaar jodo” early this year.
“One vice-president or general secretary will be in-charge of each district,” said a party leader.
