Chandigarh : The issue of Rahul Gandhi taking over as AICC president took a new turn with the AICC general secretary Ambika Soni strongly pitching for Sonia Gandhi as the party chief.

After being re-elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab, Soni today said the AICC president was a catalyst in uniting factions within the party and brought tougher the secular-minded forces to form UPA- I and UPA -II.

“We are lucky to have her as the party president who is still not 70 and who has worked tirelessly for the last 18 years. But for her, we would have never formed the governments in 2004 and 2009 at the Centre and several states”.

But at the same time, the AICC general secretary said that Congressmen want party vice-president Rahul Gandhi to be face of the party in the 2019 general Assembly elections.

The controversy over the elevation of Rahul arose after PPCCchief Capt Amarinder Singh made a strong case for him to take over the reins of the party.

However, Soni, said it was for the Gandhi family to see how they decide upon this issue. “It is for the family to take a call. We want all of them to be associated with the party. Their contribution to the party has been immense,” she asserted.
