CHANDIGARH: Accusing the BJPled National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre of hitting the farmers’ interests hard, Punjab Congress chief spokesman Sunil Jakhar on Tuesday asked Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal to oppose the “paltry hike” in the minimum support price of maize.
“Instead of doing yoga with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Chandigarh visit on June 21, the chief minister should oppose the meagre MSP hike. The real income of farmers has gone down in last two years of the NDA rule as the inflation has gone up by 7.74% while the Centre has hiked the MSP by only 4%. The Congress will hold a protest during Modi’s visit for the sake of Punjab’s farmers,” said Jakhar.
Congress leaders are also willing to be a part of a delegation to meet Modi on the issue if the latter gives them an appointment, he said during a press conference.
