Chandigarh : PPCC president Capt Amarinder Singh today said that the Union Finance and Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley was shedding crocodile tears on the ‘Udta Punjab’ movie issue.

In an informal conversation with reporters after inducting several Akali Dal and Aam Aadmi Party leaders and workers here today, he maintained that it was difficult to believe that Censor Board chairman Pahlaj Nihalani was acting without Jaitley’s consent and knowledge as Jaitley happens to be his boss.

He refuted the charge that the Congress was playing politics on this issue. The scourge of drugs is assuming alarming proportions in the state. “If somebody has tried to pick up the issue and portray our plight, shouldn’t we support him?” he asked.

Meanwhile, Amarinder signed an online petition -- addressed to the censor board -- in support of the film’s release. He tweeted: “Ban on ‘Udta Punjab’ is yet another example of how the Akali-BJP combine has always placed their electoral interest above that of Punjab… Once I take office as the CM, I will put culprits behind bars, no matter who they are, and finish this (drug) menace in four weeks.”

Those who joined the Congress included Dr Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and Col Brar from the AAP.

Mann takes on Amarinder

Criticising Amarinder for befooling people on the issue of drugs by coining Majitha as Mexico, AAP’s Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann said that same Captain shielded Majithia when it came to light that drug peddlers in the state were linked to the latter. Amarinder was now trying to get political mileage saying that he will now show unedited copies of the movie, he said.
