BATHINDA: With Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Captain Amarinder Singh set to take on the Punjab chief minister and deputy CM on their home turfs—Lambi and Jalalabad—on June 18 and 19, the party workers in these segments have received a major boost.
The Congress aims to counter the chief minister’s sangat darshan programme and make the Punjab Congress chief accessible to the people and party workers.
Last year, the Aam Aadmi Party had put on a massive show of strength in Lambi as a part of its ‘Punjab jodo’ campaign and also deployed over 1,000 volunteers in a single day in the segment under the ‘parivar jodo’ campaign in March this year.
With the dharna on June 18, in which the party will be targeting SAD over the alleged recruitment scam, and with the launch of ‘halke vich captain’ (Captain in assembly constituency) on June 19 the Congress aims to counter the chief minister’s ‘sangat darshan’ programme and make the Punjab Congress chief accessible to people and party workers.
Senior Congress leader Manpreet Singh Badal who is in-charge of the June 18 protest at Lambi said the Congress aims to “expose” the Punjab government on recruitment scam in which the right-hand people of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal were involved.
He said, “Captain Amarinder Singh has a charisma and people want to listen to him. So the protest will also rejuvenate the spirits of party workers.”
On being compared with AAP’s campaign in Lambi, Manpreet said political activity is an ongoing process and one can’t take it as an end if somebody has resorted to protest or other activity in the past.
Echoing Manpreet’s view, state Congress general secretary Hans Raj Joshan said that the start of Captain’s statewide programme from the deputy CM’s assembly segment would certainly lift the morale of party leaders and workers. “To send out a signal that the Congress will take on the SAD firmly, it was needed that the party’s leaders target the home segments of CM and deputy CM,” he said.
