Amarinder to interact with Atam Nagar residents today

Ludhiana : Former Punjab Chief Minister (CM) and Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Captain Amarinder Singh will interact with the residents of Atam Nagar Assembly constituency here tomorrow.

He will visiting the city for ‘Halqe vich Captain’ programme.

Earlier last week, senior Congress leader and former CM Rajinder Kaur Bhattal had also attended a programme at Atam Nagar Assembly constituency. It’s learnt that a lukewarm response to this programme had not gone well with the party. “It was a reflection not on the senior leader, Bhattal, but on the local leadership that failed to publicise the programme and mobilise the public,” said a party functionary, preferring anonymity. During Bhattal’s visit, factionalism in the District Congress came to the fore. There were banners which said the Atam Nagar Congress halqa in charge had organised the programme. A few Congress leaders objected to the term ‘halqa in charge’. They said the term was constructed by Akali Dal and it had no legitimacy in the Congress. Some party workers even raised the issue publicly, in Bhattal’s presence. Bhattal, however, seeking to play down the intra-party differences, said the Congress stands united.

The Atam Nagar constituency is considered the stronghold of Bains brothers – Atam Nagar legislator Simarjit Singh Bains and his MLA (Ludhiana South) brother Balwinder Singh Bains. Both the brothers contested as Independent in the 2012 Assembly elections. Simarjit Bains defeated SAD (B) veteran Hira Singh Gabria by a margin of 28,498 votes.

Among the six Ludhiana Urban Assembly constituencies, the Atam Nagar constituency is the first chosen for ‘Halqe vich Captain’ programme.

In the evening, the PPCC Chief will have a meeting with the party workers.
