BARNALA: Every MLA’s performance in the last term will be reviewed before filing nominations to contest in the upcoming assembly polls, said Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh at a ‘Halqe vich Captain’ programme in Bhadaur on Tuesday.

Health and education are top priorities for the Congress, said Capt Amarinder Singh at a workers’ meeting in Bhadaur on Tuesday.

“You will suggest the right candidate and we will recommend his name to the party high command. Congress president Sonia Gandhi will make the final call on this,” Captain Amarinder told party workers.

Talking to the media, he said ability to win will be the only criterion to select candidates, whether sitting or new.

Answering a query about aspirants signing a declaration that they will not contest against official nominees, the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president said, “There is nothing wrong with that because loyalty and discipline are prerequisites to make the party stronger. Every party does it. It’s not only us.”

Remarking that health and education needed a complete revamp, he said, “Health and education are our top priorities because Punjab’s average population can neither afford good education nor proper medical treatment. We have schools without teachers and hospitals without doctors.”

The Captain said, “We will review the blue card, yellow card and atta-daal scheme, and add tea and sugar to it as well. We are also looking at MGNREGA makeover,” adding, “We will ensure that cops do not put in more than 12 hours.”

Talking about the grant status of Khalsa College Amritsar, Captain Amarinder said, “Even if the assembly in power approves it, we will discard it and restore its affiliation to GNDU if we win.”
