AMRITSAR: Senior Congress leader and member of the Rajya Sabha, Shamsher Singh Dullo, said the Akali Dal has been “playing with the interests of the people to protect their political interests”. He was addressing a rally at Amritsar (west) assembly segment on Wednesday. “Earlier, the SAD leaders provoked terrorism in the state in the name of Khalistan and now they are spreading it in the name of drugs, which are claiming lives of the youths,” Dullo said.

“During Dharam Yudh Morcha, these Akalis persuaded the people of the state to adopt violent way to achieve their goals. Consequently, prolonged bloodshed that took thousands of lives was witnessed by the Punjab and Congress leaders, including the then Punjab chief minister Beant Singh,” he said.

“Nowadays, Akalis are destructing the state by promoting drug,” he said, adding, “Makboolpura is an infamous place in Amritsar where more than 70% people are reportedly into drugs.”

“Drug addiction is one of the biggest problems in Punjab. But instead of finding remedy for the problem, the Badal government is trying to hide it,” said Ashwani Sekhri, Congress MLA from Batala. He added, “Unemployment is one of the biggest reasons behind drug addiction, but the SAD-BJP government is doing nothing to reduce it.”
