FATEHGARH SAHIB: Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh promises to end the contractual system of appointing teachers, if the party is voted to power in the state in 2017.

Interacting with more than 2,200 teachers from schools and colleges at a ‘Coffee With Captain’ event here on Saturday, he said the contractual hiring was a temporary process and teachers should have been regular by now. “But the government changed and the Akalis didn’t look into it. Though it was my government that started contractual hiring of teachers, I do not like it personally,” he said. The participants were from 18 districts, poll strategist Prashant Kishor’s I-PAC team claimed in a press release.

Amarinder promised to regularise the services of teachers and give them a new education commission if the Congress came to power. “Most of the members of this commission will be from the grass-roots, as they can make the best education policy. Bureaucrats must be a part of it but teachers will have a more important role,” he said.
