Pesticide scam: One more arrested, challan submitted

Bathinda : The Bathinda police today submitted a challan in the pesticide scam, in which former Agriculture Director Mangal Sandhu and five others were booked. While four persons were earlier arrested, Joint Director of Agriculture Department Nirankar Singh, was nabbed today.

SP (operations), Gurmeet Singh, said the accused persons were produced in a Talwandi Sabo court.

Police officials said a fact-finding panel set up by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had found Sandhu guilty of irregularities in the purchase of Rs-33 crore pesticides, which led to the damage of cotton crop of large number of farmers.

Apart from Sandhu, the police earlier arrested pesticide dealers Shubham, Vijay and Ankush also. They all however managed to get bail along with Sandhu, the SP added.

Joint Directors Nirankar Singh and Satwant Brar had applied for a bail from the Punjab and Haryana High Court and following the rejection of their bail, the police have arrested Nirankar Singh who was produced in the court today and sent to jail. Chhinder Brar, cousel for Sandhu, said, “The next hearing in the case is on August 2, wherein Sandhu too will be present.” The police said efforts were on to arrest the last absconding accused.
